Online Safety

Rules for Internet Use. There are so many rules that you can read about, I am going to comment on what I believe is the #1 Rule

Get Involved

You should ask your children to show you their online accounts with social networks they use.  You don’t have to act like a cop, get involved ask your child to help you make an online account.  As a parent you should be able to sit in the same room while your child is online, if they persist that you leave or close the door, you can assume you have a problem, or you just have a normal teenager who is going to test their limits and your ability to be consistent.

At this point in time you will have to make a decision and stand firm with it, there are many ways to monitor, track and collect information about every online place your child visits or every word they type.  If you are not a computer person then ask around there are many individuals that would be willing to help you.  If you have to buy monitoring software I am sure that the safety of your children is worth the purchase, I am not trying to sell you on any one product there are many out there to choose from, just type in Key Logger in your browser and you will get many products to choose from  if you can’t afford one there are even free products out there that will do the job but the features are more limited.   Free Key Logger

A lot of people think that the threat of getting rid of the computer will solve the problem, WRONG!  All that does is takes the ability to monitor out of your hands. Your child will find another computer to access their online activity, computers are every where at friends houses, schools, work, libraries, and yes kids know how to bypass security features built into networks.  Getting rid of the computer only moves the problem farther away from you and any control you might have had.  Calm down these problems can take time and patience to work through.

Don’t go overboard, I believe that email and instant message is private, just as a written letter in an envelope with your name on it is.  Unless you are in a very serious situation that involves the safety of you or your children you don’t need to read every email or instant message they receive.  If your situation is serious and an online stalker or predator is in the picture you need to contact the local police most offer a cyber force that can help you.

Good Luck and Stay Safe Online
